Letting the kids walk themselves to school - when?

trophyhusband's picture

We've been having big discussions around our neighborhood about whether/when to let the kids walk to elementary school by themselves.  Just curious if others are having the same discussion and what the outcome is...  Our setting is a highly urbanized mostly residential neighborhood in San Francisco (Noe Valley, if that means anything to you)... family friendly 'hood, lots of stop signs at the intersections, painted crosswalks at major intersections, sidewalks everywhere, neighborhood is arranged pretty much "on the grid".  We are 5 blocks from school - about a 1/4 mile.

Classic cars

bhorc's picture

Anyone in to classic cars,  I like to go out to the garage an work on my car when the wife gets home. It is a never ending project. Only problem is I can not work after the kids go to bed afraid of makeing to much noise and wakeing them.  And I may only get 1/2 hour to an hour at a time. Hard to get a lot done. But it is nice to have a little dirt under my finger nails.

She Makes More Money!

A Dad’s Point-of-View, by Bruce Sallan

A recent Pew Research Center study called “Women, Men and the New Economics of Marriage (Jan. 19, 2010 by Richard Fry and D’Vera Cohn) revealed that women are making much more money, over the recent past, than at any other time in our history.  The study had the following opening: “The institution of marriage has undergone significant changes in recent decades as women have outpaced men in education and earnings growth.  These unequal gains have been accompanied by gender role reversals in both the spousal characteristics and the economic benefits of marriage.”

Trust, an abundance or a lack?

Hey guys,

I was listening to a radio morning show this morning, and they had a married couple on-air that was bickering back and forth over the husband's spending habits. What it boiled down to was that she didn't trust him, which leads me to my question to all of you.

How much trust is there in your relationship?

Pees in the potty... Poops in the pants...

Ironcat's picture

Okay, so we've been working with the potty training, and it seems to be going okay... sorta.
The boy will tell me pretty much everytime he has to go pee pee and will even wake up in the middle of the night and say he has to go pee pee so that's great...
The problem is that he only wants to poop in his pants (pull-ups, whatever). He will tell you when he has to go but bringing him to the toilet produces a fit, he says "I want to go ca ca in me pants" and proceeds to lean against a table and do just that!

at home operators

Does anyone have any experience with becoming an at home operator? I have looked on the internet. I found an article on msn and it outlined 4 major "players" in the outsourcing field. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this type of work and does anyone have any

"work" from home jobs?

thanks

New At Home Dad looking for others similar to me.....with a "What am I doing???" feeling

Matthew_Maxine's picture

To start, my name is Matthew. My wife and I met at work 11 years ago - we worked together and lived together - that was our life ever since, until Maxine has wonderfully helped us change that.  Our 1st child, born 2/28/2010 - Maxine, our daughter. I'm 38 and live in the suburbs of Chicago (near O'Hare Airport). Oh, and I am a die hard Van Halen fan...which wont make sense unless you are one too, but I just thought I would throw that out there.

How did this happen? Me staying home and not working???

Just saying hi.

Hello AHD.org!

I thought I'd register and say hi, since I've been stalking these forums for a couple weeks now.

Quick About Me: My wife is 27 weeks pregnant with our first joint child (I have an 11 year old from a previous relationship, she has no prior children), and our situation worked out to allow me to be the primary at-home parent.

When will my son get over his fascination with my penis?

Hey dads! I thought that I would be the first to jump in here with an anonymous question since the site has so graciously added this functionality.

Another question from a mom -- Am I expecting too much?

I've reviewed several threads, and I appreciate how open all of you are to questions from moms.  I would appreciate y'all's input, because I could really use some perspective from guys in my husband's shoes.

Hello there, I am an at home, looking for work at home Dad to four boys 7-14 in the Sierra Nevada foothills in northern California. I set up my own blog and started looking for like-minded blogs to help me understand the and play the role better. I was surprised to find the plethora of discussion in an area I felt alone in not too long ago. So thanks for that to one and all.

our ongoing discussion

Hi.   We're going to our first couples counseling session tomorrow and I'll admit that I'm a bit nervous.  I'm not sure what to expect or what to hope for aside from having a third party to maybe give us some insight where there may not have been any before, no matter how intelligent we believe we seem to be.   When I tell

So, I posed this question to my wife, and she thought it would be a good idea to post it on the web to ask fellow SAHD's about it.

What constitutes a true day off for a SAHD?
