Hey, I was just reading that vaccine thread and it led me to thinking wondering what you guys think/are doing or not doing about BPA. We have changed over our daughter's bottles to non bpa plastic. Also, because my wife is pregnant with our 2nd child (the really really new no. 2), we are trying very hard to be careful eating canned food, using the right water bottles, etc. Anyone know of any bpa free canned foods or other products? Does anyone have any info that would set a person's mind at ease regarding this issue? Thanks.

P.S. Here is a little info on the subject

I've covered this a few times on my blog. Many of the troubling studies were done on rats. A recent European study indicated that humans (unlike rats) metabolize BPA and excrete it in our urine (a reason why we have so much in our urine). The FDA still has "some" concern, which means that they are taking it seriously but aren't worried.

That being said, I changed to BPA free because I think the scientists need to be absolutely positive before I risk needless harm to my children. I truly don't think that there exists a huge health risk with this plastic ingredient since BPA is now ubiquitous enough that it would have killed us all by now (or made our balls shrink).

Yeah, I hope that's true.

Yeah, I hope that's true. The skyrocketing rates of diabetes and heart disease in this country do give one pause however. And speak for your own balls. Mine are like pine nuts.

Did I just type that out loud?

I know the study you're referring to, but I think the results are misleading. People with high rates of diabetes and heart disease probably aren't eating the healthiest food in the world, and if they aren't paying attention to their diet, they're also not worried about how many times they reheat plastic containers in the microwave. In other words, it's a correlation but not causation. That's my theory. I don't know if it holds water, but I have a hunch something is throwing off the numbers. We may never know.

Split the difference

I think you can drive down the centerline and evaluate such a change based on it's cost and inconvenience vs. potential benefits, real or imagined. We switched to buying organic milk on the off-chance the reports of hormones messing with girls' systems was true. With a family of 3, cost increase was no big deal. We haven't gone full-bore hippie and started buying from veggie co-ops just yet, so maybe the supermarket's genetic hybrid lettuce will kill us first anyway.

Likewise, we ditched plastic water bottles in favor of those stainless steel "Kleen Kanteens." No BPA's in them, and we're not putting more plastic into the waste stream. Plus, our water intake has gone way up, which is good either way.

Besides putting the recyclables out once a week and using a few compact fluorescents, that's about as green as I get. Still waiting on that hybrid minivan.

I think that the American diet is obviously the #1 factor in causing diabetes and heart disease, I just also think that it's an interesting enough coincidence to give one pause.

And they used to be the size of beech nuts.
