Greets, all-

I've been feeling an urge to start up a Dad's website for some time. Now that #1 is in Kindergarten, I think I have about a year (before #2 gives up his nap) to make some progress on that effort.

CAVEAT: If anyone takes offense to my soliciting opinions here for advice on content for a different site, please feel free to submit this thread for deletion. I don't mean to step on anyone's toes and I'm not trying to compete with athomedad.org.

Assuming folks generally are ok with me asking the following questions here... I think it would be great to hear from guys at any level. Almost a SAHD to those who have already sent the buggers off to college. You are probably the broadest collection of involved Dads that I've found and I'd appreciate your insights.

-What other / additional content would you like to see on a site for dads? (That's my only real question...I'll ask some more just to try and help you think of things, though.)
-What would help you get through your days more easily / successfully?
-What do you struggle with? How often (just sometimes or daily)?
-Are there any broad topics that you wish you knew more about at the beginning (old-timers)?
-What do you wish you could find more info about / What do you wish you knew more about (newbies)?
-Anything else you've wished for regarding SAHD things?

If you don't want to post your thoughts here, please send them to:
suggestions@thestayathomedad.com

Thanks in advance, guys. If I could make it to the convention, I'd buy a round for everyone who gave me a useful submission. Since that won't happen, how about a free Dad's t-shirt for one lucky submitter? Brand new. I promise. No pit stains or anything.

Cheers, all!
Seth

hmmmm....

I dunnno....

I remember the last time a guy asked for ideas and help with a dads website he wanted to start or the one where a guy mentioned another dads board to post to . It wasn't exactly welcoming. I would post a link to the request and reactions they got, but I don't want to open any old wounds.

We've created a pretty tight community here in the couple years this site has been in existence. (And from the carryover community that slowlane.com left behind when it ceased to exist.) You are basically asking the people here to create their own competition, so don't expect a warm response, if any.

Now, I am not saying that another at-home dad website is NOT a good thing. I'll go to it and read it and if I think it's good, I'll go back and check it out again. If it's consistent, I'll become a regular.

So, good luck to you!

Brianc

Survey what's out there

I think the best way to go about gathering information on this topic is to take a look around. Check out a variety of SAHD and SAHM sites, read the forums, look at what sites offer besides the usual chat, etc. Take it as a whole and see if there is something you can contribute that other sites are missing.

sorry

I don't know what you could design that would be original and popular. You've got this site for playgroups and forum, rebeldad for blogs and opinion, and athomedad.com for the latest news and information.

We don't have a large enough attention spans for anything else. And you won't find too many of us that will answer those questions because they've come before from other Dads writing books, designing bags, and making other web sites.

Good luck to you, though. And come back to tell us if you do design something cool.
