Wow, don't know why that Todd Rundgren song started running through my head.

My name is Paul and I've started posting as CreativeDad. I have two kids, 4 and 9. Been married very happily for 12 years (2nd marriage). I was laid off in 2001 from IT management (thank GOD!) and have been a SAHD for various periods since then.

I've been a programmer, cabinetmaker, woodcarver, musician, middle manager, and other less exciting roles in my working life. I'm currently figuring out if I have the stamina and creativity for blogging at creativedad.net. I have to admit, part of it is to see if some money is to be had - although, the blog is part of a larger creative business effort. I'm also finding that I'm enjoying writing about combining creativity with parenting.

Thanks for reading and I hope my comments add positively to this community.

Another writer

It's great to see another writer on here. Welcome, man.

I've been writing for over ten years and have been published in over 40 magazines, websites, newspapers, books, etc. In the past I focused on poetry and short stories, but also did a lot of freelance journalism work. But three months ago I gave all that up to concentrate on writing books for my kids. I actually threw out over 1,000 pages of writing (including half a novel). I decided I wasn't focusing on my goal of writing for fun. So with the help of my kids I have been able to turn my focus to children's books. I just got picked up by a literary agent who loved my children's book and is now shopping it around to publishers! I've got two more books done, and have another one I'm working on. I ususally try to sit down with my 9 year old and the two of us brainstorm what books he wishes they had for kids, and I go from there. It's really changed my outlook on life, and made me a happier person. A man can only write like the greats (Bukowski, HST, Celine, Fante) until he starts to live like them. And that's no way for a husband and father to live his life.

Keep writing, man. Just keep your goals in sight.

Thanks

Leigh,

I'd never consider myself a writer. In fact, it's one of the least favorite of creative activities for me. Maybe it goes back to high school when I forced myself to concentrate on English skills to rather than going with the easier math and science courses. But you make a good point - I should be viewing it as fun rather than a chore. Remember what I like about the few writers I do read for pleasure.
