Hobbies?

Recently my wife mentioned that I have no "hobbies" or "interests" outside of work (when I am not looking after the kids) and family. I can't say I disagree, but I am wondering whether this is common for Dad's to lack official hobbies and whether I am so unusual in this regard. I'd be interested to hear the perspective of others about this subject.

Funny . . .

I'm an AHD and I say the same thing about my wife. She has zero hobbies and mine are running/triathlons and guitar. In her defense, she works a lot and there isn't much extra time in either of our lives.

Many Hobbies

I have many hobbies, and I guess it does not have anything to do with me been a S@HD. I have been collecting stuff as a hobby, since was 12 yo. Now this is my short list, but not the only one:

1. I collect coins: foreign not in use coins; quarters and president dollars,
2. music from female artist, folk, pop and classic.

Besides that, my other hobby is "refinish old furniture", and once per week I went to a Community College to refinish old tables and nightstands I find in thrift stores.

So, maybe you have some unknown hobby. if not, it is also OK.

I agree with the wife...

I think everyone should pursue hobbies and enjoy life in their own quirky ways. Hobbies are more than mindless pursuits, they can define our individual personalities and they push us to pursue cultural and creative endeavours.

it's healthy

It's healthy to have outside interests (or inside interests), hobbies, activities you enjoy, goofing off, whatever you want to call it. While I don't have what I would call a hobby, I do like to run and I play baseball. Unfortunately, as I've mentioned here, I'm in a long vasectomy recovery period and haven't been able to do either of those things in close to two months.

Aside from that, I like to read and I write short stories.

Um

Um, two months for a vasectomy recovery? Were there complications or is that normal? I WAS considering having it done...

Started a blog

Although I started a blog more for therapeutic reasons then anything else I am working on learning Drupal and website design.
It is just damn near impossible I have a couple of hours at most during a day that I call my alone time.
Like I am sure a lot of you know there is no such thing as true alone time the kids are running in and out of the room asking questions trowing things etc.
Plus a lot of my supposed free time ends up being consumed by doing projects that have to be done around the house.

And screw the vesectomy I am going to go ahead and cancel that idea I was considering it.

I think I will just sit on a running microwave for 20 minutes a day and see how that works.

You need hobbies

Whether you work at a job all day or take care of your children everyone needs something to dive into, get lost in or just unwind. I make music and paint in my unsophisticated attic studio, take pictures and take classes to maybe finally finish my degree. I am a better dad because of it. Also do family things that you may not ordinarily do.

Thanks to my Hobby...

Not only have I avoided many a "go to your room until you graduate High School" moment but I also have three of the most musical kids in their school (although buddy is more musical after we have had the beans).

Even though I suck, I golf in a league every Tuesday. I a seriously the worst in the league, but everyone is cool about it and cheers me on. This is my weekly release.

I have several - Guitar,

I have several - Guitar, Music, Fishing, Building Computers, Computer Gaming and most recently the art of Charcoal BBQ. This is one reason why I adapted well to being a SAHD, I have many interests and they change. I can really keep myself occupied and stimulated (no I don't mean in that way!) given my propensity to obsess with a variety of pursuits.

My Hobbies

As I said in the other thread, I love reading cookbooks...I find that fun. I also love music (I sing and play the keyboard). I'm really into acting and love being in musicals since i can combine my love of acting and singing together for that one. My favorite roles were Benny Sountstreet in Guys and Dolls and Bob Cratchit in Scrooge: the Musical (that's the pic below, me as Bob Cratchit with Tiny Tim on my shoulder).
I also love movies and have a huge collection of them (I can never NOT have a VCR since so many are on VHS tapes). I also love photography. I've even gone on a photo trip with one of my SAHD frineds from here. Hmmmmmm...what else? I also LOVE playing laser tag...although I don't get too many chances to do this.

abnormal

I know I've freaked out a few other guys here with my stories. I had complications due to pre-existing conditions. I had hernia operations when I was a kid, and I had a severe groin/abdomen strain a few years ago playing baseball. Add that in with the fact that I didn't do enough R&R after the operation, and you end up with ongoing difficulties. I need to build up strength in my abdomen and upper legs I believe. Going to urologist today to see what he says.

Don't be afraid of the procedure, just listen to what the doc says and take into consideration any pre-existing conditions.

luckily

Luckily I get to get out twice a week and play with a 80's cover band. we play out in bars and clubs anywhere btwn none to three or four times a month. I'm the dad of the group of course. but it's relaxing. gets me away from everything. I get to be loud and bang away on my drums and have a good time. but every minute of it I wish my son was able to come. gotta wait till he gets a little bit older for him to hit the bar with me :)

making pizza

learning to grill pizza. Pizza making is all over the internet w/ recipes, grill &baking tips, theories. It's an obsessive/fun hobby that is easy to share with family (they eat it and love to comment on it.) Also, with budget tightening, it saves my family a lot of $$ on our regular friday "Pizza night."

Jammin' my Harp...

I mostly love playing harmonica. Unfortunately most times I play, my children will have nothing of it. Several friends who are musicians and parents have told me the same thing, it's like the kid is in competition with the instrument. Anyhow, I also love to garden, and to draw, and to read, and work on household projects, carpentry type stuff... and I like to tinker, with just about anything that can take a tinkering. When the kids are older, I really want to get into woodworking.

Too many

Whether or not you have a hobby, it's important to reserve some time for yourself. See a movie, go for a hike or run, etc. If I don't, I slip into the "martyr zone" and do that passive/aggressive stuff.

Need more hobby time

I haven't really had any hobby time since my daughter was born and have suffered a bit over the last three months because of it. Of course, now that we are getting settled I should be able to find a little time here and there for myself.

As far as my hobbies go there are lots of little things. I have a Good Eats/Alton Brown blog, love to take hikes at the local nature park (now with my baby sling), some computer games, experiment with cooking/grilling, little projects around the house, etc. I really need to get outdoors more and now is the perfect time to do this for both my health and so my little girl can grow up experiencing the full benefits of living int he countryside.

I know the value of having, at the very least, a little hobby after watching my dad and grandfather. They have never really had anything fun to keep themselves occupied and if they aren't busy with something they fall into a zombie-like state of watching TV/falling asleep on the sofa. It's bad enough that they even do this when they come over for visits/holidays, etc.

Just Hacking and Pro Sports

I golf in a league every Tuesday night. I am the worst in the league, but it gets me out once a week. I also enjoy going to a MLB game a few times in the summer. In the winter, I have Wisconsin Badger Football season tickets. I guess going to sporting events would be my hobby if that qualifies. I especially love checking out new ballparks when I get a chance. Wrigley is best for nostalgia, but I think PNC (Pittsburgh) is one of the best I have seen.

All remaining time is devoted to the kids and my wife.

If you forget your hobbies, you're gonna lose your mind

Everyone here has the right idea. You have to have SOMETHING that is just yours or you're gonna go nuts. And try to keep in mind when choosing your hobby or hobbies, that it isn't rude or selfish to pick something that you can't share with your wife or family. It's great if you can, but it isn't a requirement or at least it shouldn't be.

I like photography and music. The photography comes in handy with the family activities but every so often I ask for a day off and go somewhere just for me and shoot some things I want to shoot. From the creek down the street, to the mountains in the national park an hour away, I have to get away every now and again to keep sane. Without the constant interruptions and Daddy do's that arise, I can get back in touch with my inner dude and just be me, who isn't such a bad guy to be most days.

The music I share with the family. We surf iTunes and the web looking for new songs we like and then I try and learn them on the guitar and teach the kids. When we're not playing it, we listen to it while we clean the house. Everyone gets to pick a song to make the work go by quicker. Since they get a choice of music, it seems less like they're being forced to work and they don't complain as much.

Sports are fine as long as they don't lead to injuries. I spray balls around the golf course in the summer and ski in the winter so seasonally I have only minor delays in my distractions due to weather. I also play basketball and volleyball at the local rec center when I can but it's not with any regularity.

The best thing is the thing that helps you have fun and or relax while you do it. Whatever it is, if it interests you and doesn't become an obsession (like porn or gambling) you're doing fine.

Thanks to Gaming with Baby

I'm addicted to Flickr, which means my only hobby now is taking pictures. GWB has a SAHD group on Flickr if anyone wants to share some photos and get comments about them.

Those are some great photos!

Those are some great photos! I've heard about flickr, but never checked it out. I might just have to join you guys on that site - although my photos pale in comparison to the quality you guys show.

I've always had a passion for photography, but I've been away from it for awhile (where I go out with the mission of shooting great shots).

thanks for the inspiration

I feel left out...

Not because of what my hobby is, but because of what it is not...
I know I shouldn't let it bother me, but there are times when I feel like the only male on planet earth who is NOT into sports. I followed the Dallas Cowboys religiously back in 4th grade, but after Roger Staubach retired, I lost interest until 9th grade when I went out for football. I played for 3 years and sucked at each one. Since then I just haven't had any use for sports.

I do have a hobby that I have loved since 7th grade, and amazingly my wife didn't make me give it up before marrying me: Video Games! I could probably buy a condo in Florida with all the quarters I stuffed in the machines. I have also owned an Intellivision, a Vic-20, NES, Atari 2600 (in that order, believe it or not,) C64, PC jr., Gameboy, Super NES, and my current obsession, the GameCube. I know I'm a little behind. I haven't quite worked my way up to the Wii yet, either skillfully or financially.
And in case anyone is wondering...No, I'm afraid sports video games don't do anything for me. Sorry.

So why don't they call it mooching when the wife stays home?

Video Games

Aaahhh! I remember spending the New Years season of '83 playing Galaga with the Georgia Bulldogs before the Sugar Bowl. We were staying in the same hotel. Got lots of autographs. But they wouldn't let Herschel out of his room since that was his Heismann Trophy year. Nice guys, even though I was a Penn State fan at the time.
Today, I couldn't care less about sports. I guess alan68 and I will sit in a room at the convention (if I can get the bucks together) and not talk about sports. Along with these guys, I guess:

http://www.athomedad.org/node/2264

That said, my main hobbies, these days, are going to second-run movies and reading books. Of course, I've been reading the same book for three weeks now since I only read about half a page before I hear: "Daddy!!!!! Tell x-x-x to quit putting my dolls on the toilet!" (In defense of my second son, though, the doll is supposed to pee.)

I ( according to wife woman)

Am a world of warcraft junkie ...but I tell her i can stop any time i want. To play golf or go to the movies ? Nah I'd rather play wow. I can't get enough practice in to be good at golf anymore and movies are cheaper when i rent them from Itunes .
Hobbies my wife would like me to do:
Mowing the lawn
Laundry
Cleaning base boards
She says that these are good for the family and they are a good "ME" time?
HAHAHAHAHAHA I say to her.

Life is good. I have said this to myself until I honestly believe it now. I have no problems.
My hobbies are
Spending time with my friends and family. Hacking away on my computer. I love a good project around the house ( tiling the back splash in the kitchen and adding a faucet over my cook top..kinda projects)
I like to read, draw and sculpt ( after 2.9 goes to bed ...)
I also like to clean and maintain my truck the right way...check it out... http://www.zainostore.com/ Best stuff i have ever used and I've used em all
